What is TMS?
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a novel therapy utilizing focused magnetic energy to stimulate areas of the brain, in essence “rewiring” the neural pathways. Treatment is done in office and takes approximately half an hour.
TMS is well established as a non-invasive and drug free option for treatment of depression. In addition, the findings of multiple published studies indicate that TMS therapy might be a viable treatment option for patients with other conditions including fibromyalgia, chronic pain, anxiety, headache, PTSD, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Alternative to Some Medications
Many of our patients, especially those with autonomic dysfunction, have developed intolerance to medications, particularly to antidepressants and pain medications . For these patients, the side effects of the medications frequently become more intolerable than the depression or pain itself. Treatment with TMS provides an excellent alternative for these patients.
For others with conditions such as TBI, there are few if any known treatments. The ability of TMS to modulate neuroplasticity (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22882244) offers exciting new possibilities for those suffering from TBI.
